The Algarve is a stunning European paradise with a fascinating blend of history and modern comforts.
With an impressive average of 300 sunny days per year, the Algarve's sandy beaches are a major draw for summer tourists.
One of the most extraordinary natural wonders along the Algarve coast is the Benagil Sea Cave. Picture this: a vertical cave in the middle of the sea with a hole in the ceiling, creating a breathtaking scene. It is made by powerful winds and waves, a masterpiece of nature.
This magical cave is near Benagil, a quaint fishing village close to Lagoa. Surprisingly, the cave looks much larger from the inside than it looks from the outside.
Benagil Cave is one of the most famous sea caves globally, attracting thousands of visitors each year.
The cave can be visited year-round, but the best times are in May, early June, late September, and early October.
As you plan your visit, keep in mind that Benagil is only 7.5 kilometers away from Lagoa and about one hour's drive from Faro. During peak season, parking near Benagil Beach can be limited, so consider taking boat tours that depart from other nearby places.
To access this cave, there are three methods:
1. Boat Trips: Hop aboard a boat from nearby beaches or harbors. There are even boat trips that combine a boat ride with a kayak adventure. These trips offer a chance to visit other beautiful coastal attractions along the way.
2. Kayaking: Rent a kayak and paddle your way to the cave. It's a fun and adventurous way to get there, and you'll have plenty of time to explore the cave's wonders at your own pace.
3. Swimming: If you're a strong and experienced swimmer, you can try swimming to the cave from Benagil Beach. But be cautious; it can be a risky adventure due to the waves, jagged rocks, and currents. Always check the weather and sea conditions before trying this.
Safety is a top priority when exploring the cave. If you choose to swim or kayak, make sure to wear lifejackets for added protection. Remember, swimming in the sea is different from swimming in a pool. The ocean can be unpredictable, so it's essential to be prepared while enjoying the marvel of nature.
